General info

5G is the fifth generation of cellular network technology. It is the latest evolution in wireless technology, and mobile carriers have been investing heavily to build the new networks.

The technology will provide faster network speeds, lower latency and more simultaneous connections. This means more reliable video streaming and faster fixed wireless internet.

According to Verizon, 5G will provide “about 50 times the throughput of current 4G LTE, with latency in the single milliseconds” and will be able to “handle exponentially more Internet-connected devices.”

While high-frequency waves are able to transmit more data at faster speeds, they won’t be able to carry it very far. So carriers need to build a massive infrastructure of thousands of small transmitters to increase signal range and capacity. And it is unlikely to be useful in regional and rural areas of Australia, and will primarily be an urban service for densely populated areas.
